Victron Orion XS 50A vs 70A: which to choose
The Orion XS 12/12-70A offers more current than the 50A, but using it depends on the alternator, battery and BMS, cabling and installation supporting that load. Protection also differs: IP65 for the 50A and IP20 for the 70A. Start with those limits, rather than simply choosing the larger number.
What changes between the two references?
These are the two models available in MUNDUA Shop. The table shows the differences needed to choose, with links to the manufacturer's technical specifications.

| Specification | 50 A | 70 A |
|---|---|---|
| MUNDUA Shop reference | ORI121217050 | ORI121221040 |
| Input and output current setting | 1–50 A | 1–70 A |
| Input voltage | 9–17 V | 9–17 V |
| Output voltage setting | 10–17 V | 10–17 V |
| Rated power up to 40 °C* | 700 W | 1,000 W |
| Unit protection rating | IP65 | IP20 |
| Connectivity | Bluetooth / VE.Direct | Bluetooth / VE.Direct |
Rated output is not a guarantee of actual charging
*The table ratings require adequate cooling and the conditions in the manual. Power depends on output voltage: Victron illustrates 14 V × 50 A = 700 W and approximately 14.3 V × 70 A = 1,000 W. A nominal 12 V battery does not remain at 12 V while charging. Temperature, current settings and charging stage also affect the result.
When does each one make sense?
The 50A may be sufficient when the permitted charging current and intended use fit its range. The 70A adds headroom if your system can use it continuously and you need to replenish more energy while driving. If both units must be limited to the same current by the installation, the 70 A rating alone does not deliver more charge.
Both allow input and output current adjustment. The input limit must respect what the alternator can supply after the vehicle's own loads; the output limit must respect the battery and its BMS. Input and output amps are not interchangeable because the voltages may differ.
IP65 and IP20: check the installation location
The datasheet rates the complete 70A unit IP20 for a dry indoor location. Its power electronics being enclosed in an IP65 housing does not make the complete unit IP65. Do not choose it for a water-exposed location by extrapolating a general family description.
The 50A manual calls for vertical mounting with terminals facing down. The 70A permits different orientations but requires an unobstructed fan inlet. Both need cooling clearance. Replacing one charger with another requires checking location, cables and protection against that model's manual.
What to collect before buying
Use this checklist to prepare a product-selection enquiry. It does not replace electrical design or the manufacturer's installation instructions.
- Vehicle and alternator: model, voltage and continuous capacity available with other vehicle loads operating.
- Battery: chemistry, capacity, maximum charging current and BMS limits or control signal.
- Other charging sources that may operate simultaneously, such as solar or a mains charger.
- Actual cable route, cross-sections and existing protection; do not choose them from the charger's printed current alone.
- Mounting location, ventilation and potential exposure to moisture.
